The Shimanami Kaido is more than a cycling route — it’s one of the world’s great endurance training environments.
Stretching across the Seto Inland Sea, the Shimanami Kaido connects Honshu and Shikoku via a chain of islands linked by long, sweeping bridges and quiet coastal roads. For triathletes, it offers a rare combination of consistent terrain, smooth pavement, minimal traffic, and breathtaking scenery.
This is a place where quality training comes naturally.
Focus: Settle in, shake out travel fatigue, set intentions
Athletes arrive in Onomichi and check into the guesthouse. After bike setup/fitting and a brief orientation, we head out for a short activation run to loosen the legs and wake up the body. The evening is spent together over a welcome dinner featuring local cuisine, where we review the camp goals, training approach, and the days ahead.
Training
Easy aerobic run + strides
Mobility and light stretching
Welcome dinner & camp orientation
Welcome dinner & camp orientation
Focus: Aerobic base, rhythm, and efficiency
The first full training day takes us onto the Shimanami Kaido for a long, steady endurance ride. Athletes are grouped by pace, with clear targets for aerobic efficiency and fueling practice. After recovery and lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to swim technique and open-water skills (conditions permitting), emphasizing sighting, pacing, and confidence.
Training
Long endurance ride (Shimanami Kaido)
Swim technique & open-water skills
Focus: Race execution and active recovery
The morning session introduces controlled intensity on the bike followed by a short transition run to practice pacing under fatigue. After lunch, the afternoon shifts gears with a guided cultural experience — a walk through Onomichi’s hillside temples and a ropeway ride to Senkoji Park. This serves as both a mental reset and active recovery before an optional easy run or mobility session.
Training
Bike intervals + transition run (brick)
Optional recovery run or yoga
Experience
Cooking class or Japanese Langauage class
Focus: Integration, confidence, and next steps
The final day brings everything together with a mini triathlon simulation, allowing athletes to apply pacing, nutrition, and transition skills learned throughout the camp. After lunch, we close with a group debrief and individual feedback, helping each athlete translate the camp into a clear path forward for the season.

Wrap-Up - Camp debrief & individual feedback - Departures
Hi — I’m Coach Alex, and I’ll be leading this camp along with my wife and local team of close friends!
I’m a, USMS Coach, Ironman certified triathlon coach, professional bike fitter, and triathlete with a focus on smart, sustainable training and real-world race preparation. My coaching philosophy is simple: train with purpose, understand your pacing, and leave camp knowing exactly how to apply what you’ve learned to race day. We live in Onomichi and are excited to share our favorite place in Japan with athletes of all skill levels.
I believe the best training camps don’t just accumulate volume — they:
Teach athletes how to pace properly
Improve execution under fatigue
Build confidence heading into the season
This camp is designed to give you structure, feedback, and clarity, not just hard workouts for the sake of it.
I’ll be present for every session — leading workouts, setting pacing groups, offering feedback, and adjusting sessions based on conditions and athlete needs. With a small group size, everyone gets attention.
Please contact Coach Alex to reserve a spot at this Spring's Training Camp!
