The Shimanami Kaido - A Cycling Paradise

The Shimanami Kaido is the colloquial name for the Nishisetto Expressway that is 1 of 3 ways to travel from the largest main island of Honshu to the smallest main island of Shikoku. However, it is the only way to travel between by foot or bicycle!

This place has been a popular destination in Japan for some time, but has recently become very popular for foreign visitors wanting to experience the Setouchi by bicycle. The common route between Onomichi and Imabari is ~70km (~43.5mi) one-way and is endless views of one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The depths of the landscape with the calm Seto Inland Sea, islands dotting the horizon, and natural greenery set a scene that is unique to Japan.

Coming during cherry blossom season is like magic with the sakura lining the blue line cycling path. The fall is also a fantastic time to see the leaves change colors on the momiji (maple trees). But anytime of year lends to views unlike any other and cycling or walking the coasts, through old villages, and citrus groves will surely give you a sense of a natural beauty of a time now past.
